As I grow older I think of the many memories of high school. I drove past Colerain the other day, and it seems so hard to believe the many years have passed. I lived through the Vietnam War, and worked for the past 20 years for the IRS, am now retired. Sad to hear of those who have passed, and miss the teachers we had like Tom Bryant, Mr. Herzog, Mr. Hydoski, and Mr. Quebe. I remember Mrs. Styles patrolling the halls, and all the fun we had at dances, and parties. I think of you Colerain, and wish all of the alumni, HAPPY NEW YEAR, AND MAY YOU ALL PROSPER Richard Owens

Some of you may remember me as a nerd from the vocational education program! I recently attended my husband's 40th high school reunion in Missouri. Many classes converged at the event, which featured a buffet style dinner and was held in the high school gymnasium, with tables and a visual display for each class. A tour of the school was offered. We traveled from Florida to attend and it was a fun event. Since the Class of 1974 does not appear to be organizing a reunion, working with other graduating classes to share in the planning and hosting of "shared" event, might be an idea worth looking into. As a Floridian since 2002 (yes, I know all about hanging chads), I would enjoy coming back to the school for a walk down memory lane! Here's hoping someone from the Class of 1974 gets into the Colerain Spirit and starts planning something! As an aside, in December 2008, I graduated from Eckerd College with a BA in Creative Writing (maintaining a 3.97 GPA). My book, a memoir about my childhood in Cincinnati, is selling well. Check it out online at www.FindingHappy.com. I sell real estate in Tampa Bay. www.ConnieSellsFlorida.com (and love referrals). Would love to hear from other classmates! Connie Langhorst (Class of 1974)

After two years of service at Ohio University (Athens), I have accepted the position of Chief of Police/ Director of Campus Safety at Wright State University. We are happy to be back in the Greater Cincinnati area, closer to our extended family and friends. If you or one of your children is attending Wright State University, do not hesitate to contact me if you need assistance. Take Care, Mike

I am responding to the questions raised by Richard Bullis (69) re the small airport that once existed off of Pippin Rd. The airport came into existence in the late 1940's and lasted until about 1950. My father kept a plane there (after learning to fly and getting his license at the other airport, known as Mt. Healthy Airport, over on Colerain Ave. And yes, there was an accident one day at the Pippin Rd airport. It was a plane flown by a Mr. Adkins (no relation to me) who owned, at the time, a deli in Mt. Healthy. He tried to take off and failed to clear the trees - went headfirst into a tree and drove the engine back to the tail. The wings folded around the tree and met. Not good for him since he was in the engine's way. At the time I lived on Compton in a brick house that still stands. The accident was about a quarter of a mile behind us. The accident had to have occured between 1946 and 1949 as those were the years I lived in that house. Also during that time, 3 Air Force training jets ran out of fuel and made emergency landings at the Pippen airport. The runway was too short for them to safely take off once refueled but one pilot tried it, barely making it. The other 2 pilots declined, so the planes were disassembled and trucked out. Shortly after that incident the airport closed and becamne a storage lot for automobiles.

Just got the chatter to find out we had a reunion in July. I tried to get set up and had issues. I am living in California. If you could please have Karen Claybaugh add me to the notification list for reunions etc. I would appreciate it.

The Colerain Lady Cards Basketball teams will be on the road on Tuesday, December 30th to play neighborhood rival McAuley. The Freshman tipoff at 4:30 p.m. followed by the Junior Varsity at 6:00 p.m. and the evening's finale with the Varsity at 7:30 p.m. The 7 - 1 Lady Cards currently ranked 4th in the City Poll will be working to improve its record and city ranking as it faces a much improved McAuley squad. Come out and cheer the team to victory in its final game of December! On Saturday, January 3rd the Lady Cards will face Lakota West, ranked 2nd in the City Poll, at home. The Varsity game will be a shootout between the top two teams in the GMC with the Lady Cards working to move into a first place tie with the Firebirds. Saturday's game has been declared a 'Black Out' game with all fans being asked to wear Black as a show of support for the team. Lakota West's school colors are also Red and White so the team has asked that our fans stand out in the crowd. This will be the top girls basketball game in the city that day, so please show up in force to support our Lady Cards. It promises to to be a great and exciting day! I was saddened to learn about the passing of George Andrews and Mr. Sturgeon. Both were great people who made the world a better place. I often told my children stories about Mr. Sturgeons multiple choice questions on test. One question actually got to the letter Q. Also, there was the time he took us to pick wild flowers near Edgewater Drag Strip, it happened to be the day tornadoes hit in 1974. Both were great people and will be missed.

PLEASE PRAY FOR JILL (2000) & JERRY (2009) JACKSON... Their mom (age 45) was in a very horrible accident while vacationing in Mexico. She is currently in a coma and they can use all the prayers possible. Jill graduated Colerain and Jerry still attends so pray hard for our fellow classmates (my cousins). A benefit is going to be organized for next month and I will post the information once details are worked out as you can imagine there have been a lot of expenses incurred including $30k just to aircare her back to the states. Thank you so much...Christmas is a time for miracles and we really need one!

This year’s Colerain Girls Basketball team looks to have a very exciting and successful year. To help launch the home season, the coaching staff and the Alumni Association are hosting a “Day of Champions” on Saturday, December 6 at 2:00 p.m.. For this special event, all members and coaches of championship teams from the school's storied past are being invited to the game so that they might be properly recognized for their outstanding accomplishments. Recognition will occur between the Junior Varsity and Varsity games against Middletown. The girl’s basketball team won League Championships in 1940, 1975, 1977, 2000 and 2001. The program also was crowned District Champion in 2001 and was District Runner-up in 1981, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003. Additionally, the 2005 team was Sectional Champion. Make plans to come out and support this year's team and recognize those who made special contributions to what is one of the strongest programs in the area. We Are Colerain!

Re: Mr. Heath The last information I had received was October 16th. He had been discharged from Drake Hospital. Prior he had been racing his daughter down the hall in his wheelchair! At the time he still had a lot of rehabilitation still to do. Keep you thoughts and prayers going out to him.

My brother (Bryant Dold - 1983) just sent me the link about Mr. Heath. How awful. My prayers are with him and his family. He was my favorite teacher. My brother was in Mr.Heath's class as well and Mr. Heath used to tease me when I walked to my bus during that school year. Even after graduating highschool - I would still go back and visit Mr.Heath. I introduced him to my husband before we married. He is a special man.

Does anyone have information of Mr. Bryant or Mr. Herzog? Wonder about some of the old teachers there. I saw Mr. Dicken in a play some years back and can you believe he can sing. Had a great voice. I was impressed. Looking forward to another reunion for the class of 1966, if any of my old friends see this drop me an e-mail I would like to hear from you.

How sad it was to read about Mr. Heath's accident. I had him as a teacher his very first year in teaching. I believe he was 22 at the time. I remember I had him wrapped around my little finger. He was such a great guy, one of the best I ever had in Monfort Heights along with Stella Richardson. I pray he has a rapid and full recovery. Be strong Larry, hand in there!!!

Hello fellow Colerain Alumni! I just read the news from Heidi (Niehaus) Schuetz concerning Mr. Larry Heath. This is very upsetting. He is such a wonderful person and no matter where you see him to this day he makes a point to stop and talk to you. He always kept pictures of the kids on his desk under a piece of glass that covered his whole desk. He could whistle and quiet the whole gym down. He made school fun! I graduated from Monfort Heights in the late seventies also and graduated in 1985 from Colerain High School. He has had a lasting impression on my life. I will pray for him. If Heidi Schuetz reads this and has any updates regarding Mr. Heath I would greatly appreciate her letting me know. My email address is mandjsprandel@aol.com

That was a great game on Saturday at Paul Brown. I really didn't get to see very much of it having to work there in a stand. But, from what I could hear the fans were really worked up of the game. I knew when Colerain came into the stadium because I could hear the band playing and the hair on my arms was standing up and I got goose bumps. When I heard the band I told my co workers Colerain in the house without even seeing the band because they always come in playing and that's the way they should do. Be proud of your school. After almost 40 years I'm still proud to have went to Colerain. Again that was a gerat game keep up the good work team.

My message is really for those of us Colerain Graduates that attended Monfort Heights Elementary School during the time of the late 60's on. I know everyone who went to Monfort Heights remembers Mr. Larry Heath. Whether you were fortunate to have him as a teacher, or just knew him as a driving force in the school, you knew him. Larry had a terrible accident last week when he feel from the roof of his home. I just returned from a prayer service at the Monfort Heights United Methodist Church this evening where we were updated on his condition. Larry received many skeletal injuries, which have required several surgeries, including to his spine. Thankfully, his spinal cord was not affected by the fall. Both lungs were collapsed. He remains in the surgical critical care unit at University Hospital, and it uncertain how long he will need to be there. Some of you may have had his wife Cindy Rice as a teacher at, I believe they said, Colerain Elementary and Colerain Senior High Schools. The family is asking for prayers during this horrific time. If I hear any updates, I will pass them along. Maybe it would be nice to share a memory here of our days with him, and I can see about having them passed along? I was aware of both airports. My father, who graduated from Colerain in 1934, told me that someone from his era got a part-time job at one of them and later traveled all over the world as an airport designer. I vaguely recall seeing the landing strip when I was a little kid, though it was just a flat stretch of ground with packed gravel, not even paved as I recall, though that was a long time ago. I think one of them was still in use for private planes in the early 50s. There was also an attempt to build a railroad line out to Colerain, but it was abandoned in the 1920s or 30s. I clearly recall the bed where the track was supposed to go running along Compton Road in front of what used to be a large farm house (now a subdivision of course) near Pippin. I also recall a private plane crashing into the woods not far from where I lived on Compton. This was the early 1950s as my dad had to carry me on his shoulders to go back into the woods to look at it. I recall seeing the plane in the trees, but that's all I know about it.

Looks like the class of 68 is scarce. I thought that there might be a 40 reunion planned. I guess that everyone is so old that they forgot. For those few that do remember me, I am alive and well working in Lorton Va for the DEA. I do computer forensics (paid hacker) and truly enjoy the work. Something fun about helping to put the bad guys away. Love to hear about future plans for the class. Please drop me an e-mail

Thanks to Denny Hirsch, I found out that there is an article in the fall '05 chatter about the Northbrook Air Park. Which apparently was located at Pippin and Adams. Northgate mall was the home of the Mt. Healthy airport. Amazing what we learn after high school.

anyone from class of 99 heard of any finalized plans for the 10 year reunion yet?

Posted By: amy gajus (1999) On: 8/8/2008 11:39:31 AM

Of historical interest. Colerain twp airports? I knew of the one that existed where northgate mall now stands. My brother says he learned there was another one on Pippin Rd. From what I see on Google Earth, there is a rather large field across from Mercury Dr. that could have been the old airport. Actually more like a single short landing strip. Can anyone shed some light on this airport?

Charles Sturgeon will be missed by many. I have fond memories of both my Botany and Zoology classes. Including Sturg saying "I'd like to have his skull" everytime we watched a video of some animals! Then, Greg Grimm would mimmick Sturg and it was twice the fun. He gave our class some smoked groundhog meat, which was quite tasty I have to admit. He also would bring in deer jerky. He was one of a kind.

It broke my heart to hear that Mr. Sturgeon passed away. "Sturg" was a man of great character and a wonderful teacher. Attending his Botany/Zoology class was something my friends and I looked forward to each morning. His ability to bring interest, laughter, and fun to his lessons was truly appreciated. He will be missed.

Since Picnic is this Friday.... Don't worry about sending via snail mail. If you want to come, just donate the $5 at the Picnic. Once basic costs covered the rest will go to Memorial Fund. Bring your own food, supplies, game equipment. TALK TO YOUR BUDDY'S...who is bringing baseball bases, bats, Volleyball,Horseshoes,Corn Hole etc. Several local people still can not find correct contact info for...again CALL your friends! If you want to donate to Memorial Fund at the Picnic, please write a check. We don't want a lot of cash to worry about. It also is a built in receipt for you. Reunion is open to classes that attended with us, so if you have friends a year or two ahead or behind, they are welcome to join us. If you attended Colerain...Come on out! Picnic scheduled till 8 PM, with additional hour to clean-up and hang out. If you have to work you can still make it and visit with everyone. Expecting to have a good turn out for this one! See you there! Karen

She is going to Afghanistan with her husband and daughter for 3 years (her husband is teaching at The American University).
